A Detailed Look at the Juan Luis Guerra Tribute

The event honoring the Dominican artist as Person of the Year kicked off the Latin GRAMMYs

The 8th Annual Latin Grammy Awards will take Las Vegas by storm tonight, but in reality, the festivities kicked off last night in the South Pacific Ballroom at the Mandalay Bay Hotel, where a number of Latin stars practiced their big entrance at an event honoring Juan Luis Guerra as Person of the Year.

Following a projection of videos and photos of the Dominican singer’s 23-year artistic career, the poet of the pueblo, 50, was welcomed with a standing ovation. The artist was then celebrated with a musical tribute from colleagues like Ricky Martin, Diego Torres, Millie Quezada, Lucero and Daddy Yankee.

The show’s opener was Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin, who performed “Me enamoro de ella,” but seemed to forget the second verse of the song.

“Juan Luis Guerra’s music breaks boundaries,” Martin expressed. “Luis, this is just the beginning for you. Get ready, because good things are on the way.”

Singers from all over Latin America brought their own versions of the Dominican singer’s songs to the stage.
