Elivra Savino, a member of Italy’s Forza Italia party, wants parents in jail for forcing a vegan diets onto their children— even if it’s for religious or ethical reasons. Savino proposed a legislation that would criminalize diets lacking meat and dairy.

“These children are literally underfed, put in mortal danger from unwary parents who have decided to follow a philosophical movement,” was said in the proposed law.

While I don’t think it should be taken as far as jail time, I do find the idea of forcing a diet on your kids to be absurd. Let's be clear, I have nothing against vegans or vegetarians but that choice should be a personal decision.

Yes, children aren’t old enough to make their own choices at certain ages and their parents are making the judgment call on what’s best for them. However, it is possible to include meat and dairy in a healthy and balanced diet.

I remember watching an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, where Scott Disick explains that his ex-girlfriend Kourtney Kardashian is upset because while she tries to feed their kids organic, vegan meals at her home, they’re eating sugary cereals when they’re with him. As a result, the kids enjoy being at their father’s home. Shocker.

Sooner or later, your kids are eating sugar behind your back and stuffing McDonald’s down their throats before getting home from school. There goes the balanced diet.

And let’s not compare this to religion. If your culture or religion has a certain diet, that’s different. But just to make your kids vegan for the hell of it because you decided to join the “fad” a few years ago, those are the people I’m talking to.

Point of the matter is to try and stand away from restrictions; teach them the importance of a nutritious and balanced meal so that they want to eat veggies and fruits on their own. As Denis Leary said, “Not eating meat is a decision, eating meat is an instinct,” so let them be a product of their decision, not yours.
