Jessica Alba may have started her career as a Hollywood starlet, but four years ago, the mother of two turned her attention to building a billion-dollar consumer-products empire, The Honest Company. She now spends her days developing the business—which includes environmentally conscious products ranging from cleaning supplies to makeup—and raising her two daughters, all while still maintaining an active acting resume. Before she headed off to Paris Fashion Week, the ambassador of ZICO Coconut Water took moment to chat with Chica about how she maintains a healthy lifestyle despite her hectic schedule and why it’s never too late to reinvent yourself.

How do you balance your life as a successful entrepreneur, actress, mom, and wife without losing your sanity?

I don’t [stay sane], I’m completely crazy [laughs]. I don’t really balance anything. Everyday is different. I try to live in the moment the best that I can. As a mom, my number one priority is my kids’ health and happiness. If they feel okay to me, then I have room for everything else.

What do you do to stay healthy?

The most important thing is to pay attention and listen to yourself and your body. Sleep when you need to. Staying hydrated is really important. I try to eat as much fresh food as possible [and] stay away from things that are overly processed or packaged. If I can get a workout a couple times a week, I just feel good mentally. There’s ton of apps that you can download to do short meditations to kind of shut your mind off. That’s also an important thing to do once in a while if you’re feeling overwhelmed

What kind of workouts do you like?

I don’t really workout that much, but when I do, I like to do spin classes with my friends. That’s my thing now.

As someone who travels constantly, do you have any tips for the woman on the go?

You have to be hydrated. When I’m dehydrated, I feel terrible, I actually feel sick. Staying hydrated especially when you’re on the plane and when you land is really important. I can’t always control where I’m at and what food is around but I can control that. Caffeine also helps when you need it.

Until next time #Paris 🇫🇷❤️💋

Do you like to cook when you’re at home?

I do! Ever since I started the company though, I have not been cooking nearly as much as I normally do; it’s such a bummer. Now, I’m pretty much just throwing together meals from anything in the fridge that takes about twenty minutes to do. On the weekends, I’m so tired. I want to get in all my kid time with my kids. Then it’s like, “Do I really want to spend 3 hours in the kitchen or 4 hours?” Not really. I’d much rather just go to a movie. [Laughs]

What advice do you have for women who are looking to reinvent themselves in the same way you did?

Going from one career to another, I think you have to have a little bit of fearlessness to actually do it. You have to know that you’re going to make mistakes as you go but don’t allow the mistakes to define you or set you back; learn from that and move forward. Understanding the full story and not going into things blindly is really important. If you do want to transition into a new career, really understand the steps it’s going to take to get there and have realistic expectations of yourself.

Did you ever feel scared?

I have just learned a lot about myself as a leader and as a person. About my perseverance and how rational thinking is really important and valuing the things that were always things as a child [I was] disciplined for: being really opinionated, having a strong sense of self and also the direction in which I wanted to pursue things. I always questioned process, which was annoying to my teachers and my parents [laughs]. The things that people thought were bad characteristics ended up being the very thing that has allowed me to become who I am today.
