Deshauna Barber from District of Columbia won the crown of Miss USA 2016. The 26-year-old is an Army Reserve officer and IT analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Barber decided to join the army after her father’s military career as a Army Master Sergeant.

The newly crowned Miss USA hopes to work with PTSD treatment for veterans and suicide prevention in the Armed Forces, states her bio.

For her final question, Deshauna was asked about the Pentagon’s decision to open up all combat roles to women and she responded, “It is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States.”

Barber will now compete at the Miss Universe pageant later this year representing the United States.
