Finally, Mark Millar's eponymous graphic novel comes to life thanks to Russian director Timur Bekmambetov, whose known for creating the series thriller Night Watch.

The plot centers on Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), a man who's bored with his accounting job, fed up with his boss humiliating him all the time, and almost sure that his girlfriend is cheating on him with his best friend. In short, his life can't get any worse. But everything changes when he meets a woman named FOX (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him to be part of The Fraternity, a group responsible for assassinating dangerous people before they can commit their crimes. Wesley becomes aware of special gifts he never knew he had, and uses them to save others and to avenge his father's death.

As always, Hollywood took some creative liberties to adapt the story, thus die-hard fans of the graphic novel may be disappointed when they realize that certain plots points are missing. But moviegoers that are unfamiliar with Gibson's work will enjoy the special effects and jaw-dropping action sequences.

James McAvoy does an interesting job as the main character, but part of that has to do with the fact that he's portraying such an excellent anti-hero. Aside from the fact that the camera simply loves the scene-stealing Angelina Jolie, her acting isn't as solid as some of her previous performances. In the end, the film is visually fantastic, but frankly, the story leaves much to be desired. It seemed like the director was worrying more about special effects than about the characters and plot.
