"Ricky, the truth is that's it's bad. I don't support or applaud him. He's a degenerate, and I feel sorry for those kids," said Mexican talkshow host Esteban Arce, during his show Matutino Express. "I don't think it's right to deny children of maternal figures, just because you have a big ego. These kids are going to be raised without mothers," said the host, failing to acknowledge the many children that are raised without fathers because of deadbeat dads.
The Catholic church was even harsher in its criticism. On a visit to Chile, the Honduran cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez, said that in his desire to be a dad, the "Livin' la vida loca" singer acted as if he was raising cattle.
"What Martin did diminishes the dignity of a human being. You can't just buy or rent life. It's even worse when someone famous and in the public eye is doing it," said the cardinal.
Last week the Puerto Rican star announced he was father to twin boys from in vitro fertilization and a surrogate mother, who's rumored to be a cousin of the singer.
